Guide · oversight
When to hire independent test oversight versus relying on the service company.
The service company works for the spread. An independent supervisor works for the decision. Those incentives only collide on some wells — but on those wells they collide hard.
Hire independent oversight when
- H2S or critical sour raises the consequence of a sloppy program
- The well is appraisal, partner-facing, or headed for a reserves / AFE fight
- The last test produced unusable data or surprise extras
- Multiple vendors (frac, testing, wireline, flowback) must share one sequence
- You need a stop-work voice that is not paid for more days on location
The service-company supervisor is often enough when
- The program is simple, written, and the envelope is well known
- You have a trusted incumbent and a clean history on similar wells
- The data product is operational (clean-up) rather than interpretive
Enough is not the same as free quality control. You still need a written program.
How we scope it
Oversight is a package: pre-job, on-location, and data-package handoff. It is not a second testing company and not a substitute for licensed field work. See test supervisor / wellsite oversight.
| Factor | Service-company supervisor | Independent oversight |
|---|---|---|
| Paid by | The spread / testing ticket | The operator (advisory retainer) |
| Primary job | Run iron safely and efficiently | Protect the program and the data |
| Stop-work incentive | Real for safety; weak for bad data | Explicit for program and data quality |
| Best fit | Known envelope, operational flowback | Sour, appraisal, multi-vendor, high-profile |
| Not a substitute for | A written program | Licensed field execution |
Welltest Advisory provides independent program design, vendor matching, coordination, and data-package support. Licensed service companies perform field work, operate equipment, and hold the relevant tickets.
